Ferguson: Queiroz will stay

Sir Alex Ferguson denied reports stating that Carlos Queiroz is set to join Portuguese club Benfica next summer. Fergie has assured all Man Utd fans that his right-hand man will stay at Manchester United for the foreseeable future. This is the second time that Queiroz is an assistant at Man Utd, having gone for a brief spell at Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Portuguese assistant has numerous contacts with other clubs, especially in his home-country Portugal.

He was the person responsible for Man Utd’s co-operation agreement with Sporting Lisbon, the man who facilitated negotiations with Sporting and Porto to buy Nani and Anderson respectively, and the man who spotted Manucho Goncalves’ talent in Angola. Ferguson has publicly sounded his belief that, one day, Carlos will be Manchester United manager, and is convinced that he would do a wonderful job. Ferguson distinguished between the opportunity that Queiroz had at Real Madrid and the speculated opportunity at Benfica.

“The Real Madrid experience was something else. It was a job he had to take. But he learned how difficult it is. He wasn’t allowed to buy and instead told to sell players.” – Sir Alex Ferguson

Ferguson knows that he has to step down some day, even though currently he has no plans to do so. Queiroz would be better off waiting for his chance for the Red Devils, than having to start from scratch at another club. The talent he would have available at the Red Devils he wouldn’t find it at Benfica. Nor would Benfica realistically have a chance of winning the Champions League. Ferguson said:

“I am quite certain Carlos will not be going to Benfica.”
